Simply the best

In her emails, Ma'am Yvonne Chua would always write "Best," as her closing remarks.

I always understood this as her simple and very concise way of wishing us her thesis advisees all the best.

Today, however, it dawned on me that that word - best - could also pertain to her. I'm sure this is not her intention, though. You see, he may be the awesome, brilliant, extraordinary, but she had always been reachable, humble, grounded.

Ma'am Chua is the best journalism professor. Ever. No questions asked. In fact, in our acknowledgments page, we wrote this:

"Our adviser, Ma’am Yvonne Chua, for being the best journalism professor we ever had. Thank you for being the lighthouse that patiently guided us into the right direction each time we lost our track."

Her colleagues recognize this, too. In her blog, Prof. Marichu Lambino wrote:

"Not all who can practise can teach; not all practising journalists have the ability to impart and pass on their knowledge and skills; not many are able to teach Investigative Journalism, Newspaper-management, or Newsreporting; and only Prof. Chua has been able to teach these courses in a way that has nurtured students into promising journalists, even winning recognition early on in their budding careers, under her guidance and mentoring."

Enough said. I am just so blessed to have been her student and thesis advisee. :)
